How to adjust the blades of a reel mower

Adjusting the blades of a reel mower is a common task that we always did in our reel mowers, different brands come in different ways in adjusting the blades, but one thing is most of them in common, they always aim to adjust the knife blade clearance to the reel.

Some blade adjusters is spring loaded  for quick blade movement response

To adjust the blades loosen the nut that locks the knife blade so it can go up or down when turning the adjusting knob. There are two adjusting knob or nut on all reel mowers located on both sides of the mower.

Some brands use adjusting screw while some other uses adjusting knob.

Both end of the knife blade should have the same contact pressure on the reel, not too tight no too lose.

too lose adjustment will cause the blade to not cut and too tight adjustment can make the reel hard to rotate and can overheat and worn the blades quickly.

A piece of paper can be use to check the sharpness of the blades, slowly rotate the reel by hand and see if it cuts the paper across the entire blade area.

If there is a spot that’s not been cutting or if the blades are already tight and still not cutting then that’s the time that the blades need to be sharpen.

What if the blades wont move when attempting to adjust

The main reason that the blades won’t move if you attempt to adjust it is if you forgot to loosen the lock nut on the side that locks the knife blade.

The second reason is if the adjusting knob or adjusting screw is rusted and hard to move. If this is the problem then the adjusting knob or screw needs to be removed first and fix or put a new one.
